“ Erin Cluley Gallery is pleased to announce Traces a group exhibition of work by an international roster of artists including, Gary Goldberg, Jumaadi, Magdalena Rantica, Florencia Rothschild, Antonio Turok, and Sarita Westrup. Across photography, painting, and sculpture, these artists consider the ways people understand and navigate place through the body. Moving between architecture and landscape, Traces examines how movement, cultural identity, and embodied experience shape our relationships to the spaces we inhabit. Inspired by non-Western modes of thinking about the body and geography, the exhibition focuses on cultural practices and iconographies from Latin America and Southeast Asia. The wide range of material exploration and technical experimentation reflects diverse perspectives developed through the lived experiences of the artists. As such, their work troubles stable notions of how our built and natural surroundings influence our personal narratives and vice versa. Indonesian artist, Jumaadi’s shadow puppets tell scenes of love, relationships, and spiritualism through the traditional Javanese practice of wayang kulit. Sarita Westrup’s experimental baskets interpret the forms of bags brought across the Mexican- American border by her family—mortar and paint accumulated on the surface of the basket reed mimics the accumulation of experience and material through migration. In Traces, architecture becomes a vessel for memory, landscape becomes a site of transformation, and the body emerges as a conduit through which stories and traditions are carried forward.”
